The previous two posts outline the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety. This post will explore the signs and symptoms of eating disorders.
There are two types of eating disorders, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. These are disorders that are considered symptoms of depression and anxiety, they are ways in which teens cope and ways in which they exert control over their life.
Anorexia as defined by the Mayo Clinic is:
“Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that causes people to obsess about their weight and the food they eat. People with anorexia nervosa attempt to maintain a weight that’s far below normal for their age and height. To prevent weight gain or to continue losing weight, people with anorexia nervosa may starve themselves or exercise excessively.”
Bulimia as defined by the Mayo Clinic is:
“Bulimia (boo-LEE-me-uh) nervosa, commonly called bulimia, is a serious, potentially life-threatening eating disorder. People with bulimia may secretly binge — eating large amounts of food — and then purge, trying to get rid of the extra calories in an unhealthy way. For example, someone with bulimia may force vomiting or do excessive exercise. Sometimes people purge after eating only a small snack or a normal-size meal.”
Signs to be aware of:
- Perfectionism
- High expectations placed on them- not uncommon for it to be seen in kids considered the “Leaders”
- Playing with food instead of eating it, moving it around on the plate
- Frequently going to the bathroom immediately after meals
- Excessive exercise – doing exercises during teaching lessons
- Wearing big, frumpy clothes
- Excessive body image concern – never satisfied with appearance
